Why the Freest Summers Are the Best Summers

Having a one-year-old means some activities look a little different than they did before. Nap schedules matter. Snacks are non-negotiable. Everything takes twice as long and is three times more wonderful. I have written this list with toddler reality in mind; these are activities where your little one can genuinely participate even if participation looks like splashing in a bucket or falling asleep in your arms while you watch the stars. All of it counts.

Before we get into the list, I want to say something I believe the freest summers force creativity. When you cannot fall back on spending money to fill time you discover what your family actually enjoys. You find out your kid is obsessed with music or water or bugs. You realize you and your significant other love sitting outside basking in the sun more than anything. You figure out that a simple bucket of water and some cups can entertain a child for two hours straight.
